Sr. Josephine Nolan, OCD, of the Carmelite Monastery in Beacon, New York, died Tuesday, April 22, 2008, at the Kaplan Family Hospice Residence, Newburgh. She was 87 years old.

Sr. Josephine of the Incarnation (Nolan) was born July 22, 1920 in Banagher, County Offaly, Ireland, the daughter of Denis and Annie Geraghty Nolan. Sister grew up in the Bronx and entered the Carmelite Monastery there in 1954.

A graduate of the Columbia-Presbyterian School of Nursing, Sister Josephine worked as a nurse for a number of years before she entered Carmel. Sister was prioress of the community in Bronx, New York for several years, but spent much of her life caring for the physical well-being of the sisters.

In 1982, the community relocated to the City of Beacon and in 2000 united with the Carmelite Communities of Saranac Lake, NY, and Barre, VT, to form the Carmel of the Incarnation. Sister celebrated her golden jubilee of profession in Beacon on July 16, 2005.
