Sr. Monica of Jesus and the Mother of God, OCD (Bernice Eileen Schrott) was born in Stoystown, a suburb of Johnstown, PA on July 30, 1933. She was the youngest of three children, having a brother Francis and a sister Laverne. She was co-valedictorian of her highschool class and worked in law offices in Johnstown prior to her entrance. She entered the Carmel of Loretto, PA as extern Sister and made her first profession in 1959. In 1961 she was one of the founding members of the Carmel in Latrobe, PA and served as extern Sister there for 44 years.
Sister was very devoted to the Rosary and the Blessed Sacrament. Her openess to her death as a way of entering into God's will was edifying and impressive.
While she was tired most of the time in the last few months, no one suspected that she was being consumend by ovarian cancer. She never had any pain to speak of even to her death, just discomfort which came from the fluid that was building in her body . She passed away quietly on Suday morning, April 17. The Good Shepherd came for His lamb.
Friends of Sr. Monica, of which she had many, tell us they have been entrusting thier prayers to her intercession and they have been answered. She has promised to pray for her Sisters in Carmel, and we hold her to that promise.
